Gu Jie started in rehabilitation robotics before pivoting to humanoids. That detour was a hidden advantage: building exoskeletons and rehab machines forced Fourier to master disciplined actuator and force-control engineering — exactly the hard part of humanoid robots.
Fourier's GR-1 (2023) was one of the first mass-produced full-size humanoids, followed by GR-2 and GR-3 with up to 54 degrees of freedom. GR-3 targets elderly care and home assistance, a natural extension of the company's medical roots.
Gu represents a different route into humanoids — not from quadruped cost engineering or AI hype, but from regulated medical hardware. Fourier is backed by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and Saudi Aramco's Prosperity7, and has raised roughly US$190 million. It also open-sourced Fourier ActionNet, a large humanoid training dataset.
