Who he is

Qin Shentao went from a remote Shanxi village to No.1 at Harbin Institute of Technology, then into a Tsinghua PhD. His company, OriginFlow, does not build robots — it builds the training data that teaches them.

OriginFlow uses neuro-muscular (sEMG) signals to capture how human hands actually work, turning fine manipulation into robot-training data. The thesis is that data, not just hardware, is the scarce infrastructure of embodied AI — and whoever owns the data owns the future.

Why he matters

Qin is betting on the "picks and shovels" layer of robotics. The bet attracted more than 500 million yuan in five months from top VCs including Monolith and 58 — before he had even graduated. He represents a new pattern: young researchers treating data as the moat, not the robot itself.

Key facts

  • Background: No.1 at Harbin Institute of Technology → Tsinghua PhD.
  • Approach: sEMG neuro-muscular signals → robot training data.
  • Funding: 500M+ yuan in ~5 months, including Monolith and 58.
  • Timing: Raised before graduating.
